What is Orbera?

Orbera© is a non-surgical weight loss system designed to help overweight or obese people shed excess pounds. To learn how this minimally invasive procedure can help you achieve your weight loss objectives, contact Dr. Azeem Khan or a member of his team of professionals at Forest Hills Gastroenterology at our locations - in Elmhurst, NY. Forest Hills, NY.

How Does Orbera Work

The Orbera Intragastric Balloon System, its official brand name, has been designed as a temporary lifestyle tool to assist those in reaching weight loss goals. While the balloon is in your stomach, you work with a team of professionals trained to help you develop healthier lifestyle habits as a part of your daily routine. The primary phases of the Orbera system include:

The Outpatient Gastric Balloon Placement

The procedure, which is non-surgical, takes approximately 20 minutes. While mildly sedated, a deflated gastric balloon is inserted through your esophagus until it reaches your stomach.

The Balloon Inflation

The balloon is inflated with saline until it reaches the size of a grapefruit. When filled, the balloon creates a feeling of fullness.

Changing your Habits

While the balloon is in place, you retrain your brain – by eating less, so you can better expect when you have eaten enough and are feeling full or satisfied. This phase includes ongoing support from a team of professionals. During this time, patients can lose 20 to 50 pounds or even more.

How Long Does the Orbera Balloon Remain?

After six months, the gastric balloon is removed endoscopically. The procedure, which is done under mild sedation, is similar to the process by which the balloon was initially inserted. The removal process takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

For Whom is the Orbera System Designed?

The procedure, which is not suitable for every person, is generally recommended for a) those with a BMI between 30 and 40 and b) those that have been unsuccessful trying other or more traditional weight-loss approaches – i.e., diet and exercise.

Additionally, the gastric balloon system may not be a good choice for -

  • Individuals who are challenged by specific medical conditions, or
  • Individuals who have had abdominal surgery in the past.
