Is the Weight Loss Balloon Right for Me?

You have been struggling to lose weight, though not from a lack of trying. You’ve focused on your health because you want to avoid chronic or long-term health conditions that may impact your quality of life. Finding the right balance here can be difficult, and we at Forest Hills Gastroenterology in Forest Hills, NY, are here to help you succeed. Dr. Azeem Khan has a wide range of gastroenterology training and experience that he brings to ensure you get the best possible treatment.

We can help you evaluate if the weight loss balloon is your appropriate next step or if alternative treatments would work better. We can try many options and be your partners along the way.

What is the weight loss balloon and procedure?

This non-surgical procedure involves placing a gastric balloon within your stomach. The balloon is designed to help you become full more quickly, as there is less space left in your stomach for food.

The procedure works by inserting an endoscope through your mouth to place the balloon. Once it has been placed, your physician fills the balloon with a liquid saline solution or a gas, which causes the balloon to fill or inflate.

This procedure lasts up to six months, at which point you will visit the doctor to get the balloon removed.

In addition to the procedure itself, you will need to commit to lifestyle changes to ensure you get the full benefits of the procedure. This consists of sticking to a healthy lifestyle with exercise and a balanced diet. After the balloon is removed, continue your healthy lifestyle to prevent the weight from returning.

Results from clinical trials have shown that individuals lose between 26-46% of excess body weight while the balloon is in place.

Who is a good candidate for this procedure?

Patients with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 are eligible for this procedure if they have not had prior weight loss surgery. It is also a good option to help reduce surgical risk before an upcoming operation.

Patients who pursue this procedure will need to commit to a 12-month diet and exercise routine to build habits to ensure they are successful for the long haul.

You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant. You should also talk to the doctor if you take anti-inflammatory or anticoagulant medications.
